English Language and Culture I, II, III & IV

Share |

These courses (HIS233, HIS234, HIS332, HIS333) are designed to improve the English fluency of students whose native language is other than English. It is for students who want additional training to enhance their English-speaking skills and learn more about American/English culture.

The ELC program is a series of four progressive three-month courses.
These courses feature exercises in listening and speaking, field trips, small group interactions and language labs.  The ELC curriculum focuses on English used in everyday life. Your English will steadily improve as you learn to read, write and speak in fun and creative ways. You also can grow in your knowledge of Jesus, studying the Bible as part of the program. You will have daily small group lessons with native English-speaking teachers and outings to meet new friends and see the beautiful island of Hawaii.

Cross cultural experience

A secondary emphasis of ESL is cross-cultural adaptation. Each ESL course offers numerous activities that expose students to different aspects of American culture. The University has many international students, and there are daily opportunities for students to build cross-cultural relationships and to broaden their English language ability. For example, students regularly dine with native speakers in our common eating area. This gives students daily opportunities to practice their English and make friends at the same time. Our location is another benefit to the student seeking to learn English. Hawaii is often called the Crossroads of the Pacific because of its rich blend of peoples and cultures so even outside the campus students can have daily cross-cultural experiences.

Course content

The emphasis is on listening and speaking, but attention is also given to improving each student's reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. Instruction will be at levels appropriate to each student's degree of competency as determined by an initial placement test. A variety of instructional methods are employed by our trained language teachers. For those students who find that three months is not enough to master English to their satisfaction, a second three-month ELC (HIS 234) is available.
